KOOKS stands for the Keepers of Odd Knowledge Society, an ancient and revered secret society… so secret that no one has ever heard of it until now.

KOOKS 2d10 RPG is a set of rules for playing traditional tabletop role playing games. It is intended to be a ‘rules-lite’ yet complete set of rules.

What is the 2d10 system you ask? It is intended to replace the 1d20 used commonly in some RPG systems. I think the big advantage of using 2d10 instead of 1d20 is that the roll results in a ‘bell curve’ with most of the results in the center, and fewer at the outliers — in other words it is more likely that you roll a result that will be in the 'middle' and less likely to be very high or very low. This does create some changes that should be considered by the GM.

NOTE: I usually don't issue version 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. when I make changes to the rules unless they are really dramatic and change the game. Instead, when I make 'incremental' changes I just put 'today's' date at the end of the file name and in the copyright crap after the title page. So you can see if you have the latest version by looking at the date.

I have a question about the spellcasting DT roll. I may not be reading it correctly. It states 'The Difficulty Target (DT) for all spells is: 10 + Magic User Level + Magic User's BRAIN Bonus.'  This seems to me that you are punished for being higher level. I see in other games where the DT would be 10+spell level and you would try to roll 2d10 + caster lvl + brain bonus to beat the DT and cast the spell.   Am I misreading or not understanding something? I do like the game very much!

The Difficulty Target is the number that will be used by an opposing party trying to counter or resist your spell. Thus the higher your level, the higher the DT for the spell, and the more difficult it is the counter the spell.

So your spell is always successfully cast?

These spells come from the SRD 3.* system. All of Microlite20 is from that source. Unless the spell calls for a test of some sort they are automatically a success... you just have to pay the cost in HP. The difficulty test comes into play occasionally when you are casting against another magic user who can use a counter-spell against your spell, and monsters that have a natural defense against magic.

Thank you. I never played any 3.x stuff. I do like MicroliteD20 very much tho. Everything else is too many rules. Thanks for the work you have done with this.

I am going to ask for a little favor. Could you go to my website and leave glowing reviews for KOOKS 2d10 RPG mentioning what a great game it is and how handsome the author is?

:)

I jump around a lot between rules systems. Even Rules-Lite systems. I find that I forget at times that Kooks uses 2d10 rather than 1d20. Oh my!

Well, my players are kind enough to remind me, but... it doesn't seem to make big differences. The real difference is the lack of the 'curve'. 1d20 has no curve. So if you want to use a 1d20 rather than 2d10 just remember to adjust the critical hits and misses... or not. Its up to you!

I am going to really try to make no further changes to the rules, or if I do wait until 1st January 2026 to post them. Until then all additions and changes will be found in the attached Addendum.
